About English.me
A free English level test that’s quick, honest and built to be accurate, plus clear articles about the English people actually use.
What English.me is
English.me is an adaptive English level test. In about 8 minutes, it places you on the CEFR scale from A1 to C2, tells you what you can do at that level and shows you what to work on next. It’s free, and there’s no signup.
How the test is made
Every question is written for a specific CEFR level and checked so that it has one clear answer. The wrong options come from mistakes real learners make. The test covers grammar, vocabulary, reading and listening, and the listening questions are short voice notes in different accents.
Scoring uses item response theory, the family of methods behind major computer-based exams. Each answer updates the estimate of your level, and the next question is the one that tells us the most about it.
Honest by design
We don’t round results up to make people feel good. If you’re close to the next level, your result says so. The test also gets better over time: as more people take it, their answers fine-tune how hard each question really is.
The knowledge section
Alongside the test, the knowledge section explains common grammar and spelling mistakes, words that are easy to confuse and everyday English phrases, each with examples.
Independent
English.me is an independent project. It isn’t affiliated with Cambridge, IELTS, TOEFL or the Council of Europe, which created the CEFR.
