“I’m agree” or “I agree”: which is correct?
The short answer
Say I agree, not I’m agree. Agree is a verb, so it comes straight after I, with no am in front of it.
Grammar mistake
Why people get it wrong
Many languages say this with be and an adjective or a phrase: Spanish estoy de acuerdo, French je suis d’accord, Russian я согласен. Translated word for word, they all come out as I am agree.
In English, agree is an ordinary verb, like think or know. You wouldn’t say I’m think so or I’m know, and I’m agree is wrong for the same reason.
The rule
Use agree like any other verb: I agree, she agrees, we agreed. Questions and negatives need do: Do you agree? I don’t agree.
The word after it depends on what you agree with. You agree with a person or an opinion, agree to a plan or a request, and agree on a decision you make together.
Be agreed does exist, but only to say that a group has made a decision: Are we all agreed? It isn’t a way to say I agree in a conversation.
How to remember it
Swap in think. You’d say I think so, not I’m think so, so it’s I agree, not I’m agree.
Examples with I agree
- I agree with you completely.
- I don’t agree that it’s too expensive.
- Do you agree with the new rules?
- She agreed to help us move on Saturday.
- We finally agreed on a date for the meeting.
Quick check
You’re right. I with you.
Agree is a verb, so it comes straight after I: I agree with you.
