Look vs. watch: what’s the difference?
The short answer
You look at something when you turn your eyes towards it, usually for a moment. You watch something when you keep your eyes on it for a while because it moves or changes, like a film, a match or the traffic.
How they differ
Time. Look is usually short: you look at a photo, a clock or someone’s face. Watch lasts: you watch a film, a football match or the sunset.
Movement. We watch things that move or change: watch TV, watch the traffic, watch the children in the park. A painting doesn’t move, so you look at it.
Grammar. Look needs at before its object: look at the board, not look the board. Watch doesn’t take a preposition: watch the news, not watch at the news.
Other meanings. Look can mean seem: You look tired. Watch can mean be careful with: Watch your step. Watch what you say.
What they have in common
Both are about using your eyes on purpose. That makes them different from see, which just means that something comes into view, whether you meant to notice it or not. Both are also used to get someone’s attention: Look at this! and Watch this!
Examples
look
To turn your eyes towards something on purpose. Before the thing you look at, it needs at: Look at this photo. With no object, it stands alone: Look! It’s snowing.
- Look at this photo. Do you recognise anyone?
- She looked at her phone and smiled.
- Look! The sun’s coming out.
watch
To look at something for a period of time and follow what happens. It takes its object directly, with no preposition: watch a film, watch the news.
- We watched a film and went to bed early.
- He was watching the news when I called.
- Watch your step. The floor is wet.
How to remember it
If you follow what happens over time, you’re watching. If you just turn your eyes to something, you’re looking at it. That’s why we watch TV but look at a photo.
Which one is more common?
Quick check
Last night we stayed in and a film.
You follow a film from start to finish, so you watch it. Look would also need at, and you look at things only briefly, like a photo.
